Meet Spiney
Sometimes the most the hardest moments in our lives can bring us the greatest opportunities. This happened to me after experiencing a life-altering accident that left me paralyzed and in a wheelchair. At only twenty-seven years old, the picture of my future didn’t quite look the same, but I would be able to make a difference. I started to write, not only as a way of healing, but to find a way to tell my story to the children I taught. In 2005, alongside friend and illustrator Dorothy Perez, my first book, New Opportunities, in which I became the character Spiney.

Imagine what you could do if there was nothing to hold you back, no obstacles, you're free. Scuba did that for Shelly. Out of her wheelchair and into the trusting hands of Jim Elliott of Diveheart, she soon realized anything is possible. All it takes is the guidance of someone who believes you can do something. Imagine what we can do for those living with disabilities, if we took the time to show them what they CAN do. We hold in our hands the ability to make a difference, change a life, a mind, or a circumstance. Diveheart does this one dive at a time.
